Senator Karen Nyamu Ejected From Chambers Over 'Inappropriate Dressing

On Tuesday afternoon, Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu was asked to leave the Senate chambers due to inappropriate attire. Nyamu had worn a kitenge skirt and a black sleeveless blouse that exposed her arms, which is considered unsuitable under the House rules.

Before asking Nyamu to leave, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi referred to the Speaker's Rule number 5, which mandates that Senators must dress properly before entering the chamber, lounge, or dining room. A male senator is expected to wear a coat, collar, tie, long trousers, socks, shoes, or religious attire while a female senator may wear kitenges or other African attire.

The Speaker ordered Nyamu to leave the chambers and return only when appropriately dressed. He told her that she did not meet the required standard and asked her to leave, dress appropriately, and then come back to the chambers.

The Senate resumed its Second Session of the 4th Senate on February 14, Tuesday, after the long recess.
