Two million people could be affected by Cyclone Freddy if it hits Madagascar
Madagascar authorities said on Monday that about two million people will be affected once Cyclone Freddy makes landfall in the eastern part of the country.
Experts from the National Disaster Office have predicted that the hurricane will hit nine regions in the country.
Emergency forces are preparing to deal with heavy rains, floods and even landslides in areas that will be affected.
The cyclone has been hitting the Indian Ocean for several weeks and according to experts, its effects will be seen between the districts of Vatomandry in the southeast and Manakara which is on the east coast.
Those living in those areas have been advised to strengthen their doors and roofs, cut down dangerous trees and stay at home during the storm.
The island nation is among the top 10 countries in Africa most affected by hurricanes and vulnerable to disasters, according to the World Food Programme. The previous tropical storm that hit the country was Cheneso, which hit in January this year. About 30 people died and more than 40,000 were displaced.
