AFC Leopards 2023 Season Review

As the curtains fall on the 2023 season, AFC Leopards fans find themselves reflecting on a rollercoaster ride.

This year has been a mix of highs and lows for the 12-time FKF Premier League champions. Let’s delve into the key moments, challenges, and financial insights that defined their journey.

On the Field: Performance and Setbacks

The Seventh-Place Finish

AFC Leopards secured a seventh-place finish in the 2022-23 season, accumulating 51 points. While this position is respectable, it falls short of the club’s historical dominance. The champions, Gor Mahia, finished 19 points ahead, leaving Ingwe with work to do.

Trophy Drought Continues

The bitter taste of a trophy drought lingers for AFC Leopards. Their last major title victory was in 2017 when they clinched the FKF Cup by defeating Kariobangi Sharks. Since then, silverware has eluded them, and fans yearn for a return to glory.

Coaching Drama

The departure of head coach Patrick Aussems added to the club’s woes.

Aussems, who had led Tanzanian giants Simba to league success and CAF Champions League quarter-finals, cited personal reasons for not renewing his contract. His exit left a void, and assistant coach Tom Juma stepped up to lead the team.

Financial Insights: Revenue Surge and Challenges

Revenue Growth

Despite on-field struggles, AFC Leopards recorded a significant revenue increase in 2023.

Their income soared to Ksh103,167,127, a substantial leap from the previous year’s Ksh67,423,245.

Key contributors included sponsorship deals (thanks to Betika) and improved gate collections.

Rising Costs

However, the financial report reveals a sobering reality. Expenditures surged, with direct costs, administrative expenses, and financial costs all playing a role.

The club ended the year with a Ksh8,596,663 loss, emphasizing the need for prudent financial management.

Looking Ahead

As AFC Leopards regroups, fans hope for a brighter future. The club’s legacy remains intact, and the hunger for success persists.

With a new coaching setup and renewed determination, Ingwe aims to break the trophy drought and reclaim their position at the top.

Remember to stay tuned for updates on AFC Leopards’ journey—both on and off the field!
