An electoral officer in Kenya who was in charge of a constituency in the recently concluded election collapsed and died on Monday.

Geoffrey Gitobu was in the offices of the electoral organization in the city of Nanyuki, in central Kenya, when he collapsed and was pronounced dead at a hospital near the office.

He was the election manager in Gichugu constituency, Kirinyaga country in central Kenya.

Mr Gitobu had not complained of any illness and was in Nanyuki to visit his family at the weekend before heading to the office on Monday.

However, Laikipia County Criminal Division Head Onesmus Towett denied rumors about the officer's death and said it was a sudden death and not murder.

Mr. Gitobu was supposed to report to his Kirinyaga base on Wednesday, County Electoral Officer Jane Gitonga was quoted by the Star newspaper as saying.

The officer's death comes a few days after another officer in charge of a constituency in the capital, Nairobi, was tortured and killed after disappearing from a polling station.

The chairman of the election commission, Wafula Chebukati, previously said officials were being intimidated and threatened about the August 9 general election.
