Former Sotik Member of Parliament Anthony Kipkosgei Kimetto has died.

The former Member of Parliament died at Nairobi Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for diabetes complications.

His son, outgoing Sotik Member of Parliament Dominick Koskei, confirmed his father's death.

"It is true, Mzee has left us. He passed away on Monday while receiving treatment," said Mr Koskei.

He said the family will provide detailed information and share funeral plans later.

Mr Kimetto, who served three terms as Member of Parliament for Sotik in Bomet County, was defeated in the 2007 General Election by former Home Affairs minister Lornah Chepkemoi Laboso.

Her son Dominick Koskei took over from Ms Laboso as the MP for Sotik in 2017 but was defeated by former Nairobi state commissioner Francis Sigei of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in this year's election.

Mr Koskei defended his seat as an independent candidate after losing the UDA primaries on April 14 to Mr Sigei.

Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) leader Isaac Ruto, former East African Cooperation Minister John Koech, Sotik Member of Parliament Francis Sigei, Bomet East colleague Richard Yegon and outgoing Bomet Women's Representative Joyce Korir are among those who sent their condolences to the family.
