Hong Kong to attract tourists by offering free plane tickets
Hong Kong says it will issue 500,000 airline tickets, worth HK$2bn ($254.8m; £224.3m), as it tries to boost its Covid-hit tourism sector.
The city relaxed several of its corona laws in recent weeks.
The airport authority will finalize the arrangement with the airlines. As soon as the government announces that it will lift all Covid-19 restrictions on inbound travelers, we will launch promotional campaigns for free flight tickets," said Dane Cheng, the airline's executive director.
Mr Cheng added that the free tickets, which were bought to support Hong Kong airlines during the epidemic, will be distributed next year to domestic and international travelers by the city's airport authority.
However, major airlines are struggling to return their flight schedules to pre-crisis levels.
Last month, the Hong Kong government said it would no longer require people arriving in the city to go into hotel quarantine, or show negative Covid certificates before boarding a flight to Hong Kong.
On Wednesday, British airline Virgin Atlantic said it would stop operations in Hong Kong because of issues related to the war in Ukraine.
Mr Cheng added that the free tickets, which were bought to support Hong Kong airlines during the epidemic, will be distributed next year to domestic and international travelers by the city's airport authority.
