The striker of Senegal, Sadio Mane, will miss the World Cup after undergoing surgery

On Tuesday, Senegal's football federation said Mane, 30, would miss their "first games" of the tournament. But further MRI scans were completed on Thursday which indicated surgery was required.

Mane was forced off during Bayern's Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen on November 8.

Bayern have confirmed that the player "underwent successful surgery" on Thursday, to reattach a tendon in the knee area.

"The striker will start his treatment in Munich in the next few days," the club added.

Senegal starts the World Cup against the Netherlands on Monday.

The West African hosts are in Group A with matches against hosts Qatar (November 25) and Ecuador (November 29) to follow.

Two-time African Player of the Year Mane is Senegal's star man, after scoring the winning penalty as Teranga Lions emerged as champions of the continent for the first time in February, defeating Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Within two months Mane had repeated the feat, scoring a penalty as Senegal beat Egypt - in a game that reunited him with his then Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah - on penalties in the Qatar qualifiers.

This will be heartbreaking for Mane after a year where everything was like a dream for him at the international level.

His performance in helping Senegal win the Cup of Nations and qualify for the World Cup, as well as his performance in the first half of the year with Liverpool, helped the Bayern Munich striker to be voted in second place for the Ballon d'Or award.

Only a motivated Karim Benzema prevented him from becoming the first African player since George Weah to win the award.

But Mane was hoping to help Senegal reach at least the quarter-finals in Qatar.
