Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid shine at the Afrima awards

Nigerian music stars such as Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid have dominated the eighth edition of the All Africa Music Awards (Afrima).

Tala by the Ivory Coast artist Didi B, has been named the best song of the year in a prestigious ceremony held in the capital of Senegal, Dakar.

This year, big stars including Ghanaian rapper Black Sherif and Nigerian brothers P-Squared took to the stage to perform.

Nigerian singer Asake was named the 'up and coming' Musician of the Year. During his speech Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, said winning the award was a dream come true: "It started as a dream, but today, it's a reality. Thanks to God, my label and all my fans who listen to my songs."

Burna Boy, who won Best Artist of the Year and Best Album of the Year, Davido, who won Best Male Artist in Inspirational Music Africa, and Wizkid, who won Best African Artist, were not seen at the ceremony to receive their awards.

There was controversy in the preparations for the awards, after people signed a petition calling for Nigerian singer Brymo not to win the Best Composer of the Year award, after he sent a series of messages on twitter that were interpreted as insults about the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.

More than 40,000 people signed the petition against the singer, whose real name is Olawale Ashimi.
