Mejja Shares Heart-Wrenching Experience of Suffering from Throat Condition that Impacts his Voice
Perplexity and burstiness aside, it is a somber news that the renowned Kenyan rapper, Major Nameye Khadija 'Mejja', has been diagnosed with a throat ailment that has hindered his ability to record music. The lyrical storyteller shared in an interview that the condition started off as a persistent sore throat last year and has since evolved into a debilitating affliction. He revealed that during his tour in August 2022 in Australia, he first experienced the symptoms but brushed it off as just a simple sore throat. However, upon his return to Nairobi, the pain in his throat worsened, accompanied by bouts of voice loss.
"People are surprised that I have fallen silent, as I should have released more music by now. But, I am grappling with a throat issue," he stated.
Mejja had tried to self-medicate with over-the-counter drugs but to no avail. It was only after noticing blood in his sputum that he sought medical attention from a specialist Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) doctor. The condition has affected Mejja's voice significantly, making it difficult for him to hit high notes and perform some of his popular songs.
"I was only able to perform on stage recently because I had not used my voice in a long time and even then, there are songs that I can no longer perform. Like I can do 'Tabia Za Wakenya Kanairo' because it's at a low pitch but now I cannot hit the notes on 'Bablas' or even 'Siku Hizi Ni KuBad', my voice cracks," he shared with a hint of disappointment.
Despite the prognosis being uncertain, Mejja remains hopeful that he will recover and get his voice back. He acknowledged that his doctors have advised him to drink more water, as poor water intake could have contributed to his throat condition.
"I am just hoping for the best, as I was planning to release high-pitched songs. This is also affecting me psychologically, and I cannot imagine giving up on music," he appealed.
