KNQA Steps Up Recognition Of Prior Learning In Harmonizing Qualifications

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) is pushing forward in its mission to eliminate obstacles and establish dependable and credible recognition systems for knowledge, skills, and competencies by expediting the implementation of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

During a recent press conference in Nairobi, acting Director General Dr. Alice Kande stated that RPL has the potential to provide a cost-efficient alternative to formal education and training while facilitating multi-entry and exit between the education system and the labor market.

Dr. Kande noted that the traditional recruitment process relies on formal certifications, which are often lacking in informal learning experiences. This leads to employers hiring employees who may not possess the necessary competencies required for the job.

She stated that "there is a disconnect between the knowledge an individual has acquired and the practical expertise required in the field. This is frequently the case when an employee has a wealth of knowledge but lacks hands-on skills."

According to Dr. Kande, many employers are interested in RPL as it can add value to their current training efforts by having their staff recognized and awarded certificates. At the same time, she emphasized that RPL will increase competitiveness and productivity among employees.

"The Jua Kali sector has already embraced RPL as a solution for their many skilled but under-recognized members, who will now have the opportunity to enhance their competitiveness," Dr. Kande added.

The National Technical Implementation team for RPL, consisting of representatives from various stakeholders, will convene in Naivasha tomorrow to discuss the implementation strategy.
