People Trapped Under Rubble in Turkey and Syria New Earthquake

Rescuers in Turkey earthquake

Rescuers are once again searching for people trapped under the rubble after two new earthquakes struck Turkey, killing at least three people.

Magnitude 6.4 and 5.8 earthquakes hit the southeast near the border with Syria, where the tremors devastated both countries on 6 February.

Previous earthquakes have killed 44,000 people in Turkey and Syria, leaving tens of thousands of others homeless.

Buildings were destroyed and aftershocks rocked both countries on Monday.

Turkey's disaster and emergency agency says the 6.4-magnitude quake struck at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT), followed by a 5.8-magnitude quake three minutes later.

The three deaths occurred in Antakya, Defne and Samandag, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu urged people not to enter potentially dangerous buildings.

Mr Soylu said 213 people were also injured.

Reports from the city of Antakya spoke of panic in the streets as ambulances and rescue workers tried to reach the worst-hit areas where the walls of badly damaged buildings collapsed.

"I thought the earth had split under my feet," local resident Muna al-Omar told Reuters news agency, crying as she held her seven-year-old son.
