On Thursday, La Liga reported that Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior was subjected to racist insults during his team's match against Real Betis, and the case has been presented to a Seville court. Unfortunately, this is not the first time the Brazilian forward has experienced racial abuse in several stadiums this season. In fact, he faced a similar situation in Madrid's 0-0 draw against Benito Villamarin last Sunday.
According to the Spanish top-flight league, this is the seventh complaint they have made regarding racial insults aimed at Vinicius. In January, an effigy of the player was hung from a bridge in front of Real Madrid's training ground before their match against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. The Spanish police are currently investigating this incident.
Atletico Madrid fans were also caught chanting racial slurs at Vinicius in September 2022. However, no charges were pressed by Madrid prosecutors. Vinicius expressed his disappointment with La Liga in December for not taking sufficient action against racism in Spanish matches. During a win at Real Valladolid, he was also subjected to racial abuse.
Vinicius Junior is one of the brightest talents in football and it is unacceptable that he continues to face such abuse. The sport must take a strong stand against racism and make it clear that it has no place in football. It is crucial that the authorities take appropriate action against those who perpetrate such vile acts.
