Drama as goons attempt to attack IEBC staff at city hotel
On Monday a gang of goons who were carrying weapons allegedly tried to attack the staff of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
According to the information provided by the commission, the attempt happened at around 2:30 in the night in a house in Nairobi.
The workers were preparing responses to the presidential election complaints filed earlier that day.
IEBC said the group of hooligans were chased away by security guards who were in charge of the area.
"An organized group of thugs armed with dirty weapons tried to attack IEBC staff preparing responses to the Presidential election complaints in Nairobi. However, they were stopped by security guards," the commission said.
The IEBC has asked the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to ensure that its employees are protected.
"The Commission condemns this act of hooliganism and intimidation, and calls on the Inspector General of Police (IG) to stop this flagrant abuse of the Rule of Law."
This happened while the IEBC officer in charge of Gichugu constituency Geoffrey Gitobu reportedly passed away after suffering a mysterious illness and fainting while at the IEBC office in Nanyuki on Monday.
The officer had gone to see his family in Nanyuki during the weekend after the intense election exercise and was supposed to return to Kirinyaga on Monday to prepare to return to work later this week.
Kirinyaga county election administrator Jane Gitonga said that the 57-year-old man had never complained of any illness and therefore an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
