Britain denies meddling in Kenya's presidential election

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott has dismissed allegations that she and her country interfered in Kenya's recently concluded general election.

Ms Marriott was responding to allegations on social media that she pressured the electoral commission to declare William Ruto as the president-elect after the disputed election.

Some netizens posted unverified pictures online showing Mrs Marriot greeting Mr Ruto and election commission chairman Wafula Chebukati.

In a series of tweets, Ms Marriott said Britain "does not endorse or have any views on any candidates or parties in the election", calling the claims "disinformation".

"Who Kenyans elect is a matter for the people of Kenya. We met with people from various political fields to explain the plans and cooperation between the UK and Kenya, including independent institutions," she said.

Mrs. Marriott said Kenya will remain an important partner of the United Kingdom, adding that the United Kingdom is ready to support leaders elected by the people.

Presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Monday called on unnamed foreign countries to stop meddling in Kenyan politics.
