Kenya has given mobile companies 60 days to register all simcards
The Telecommunications Authority in Kenya has given mobile phone companies 60 days to ensure all customers have registered their simcards cards.
This comes after the service providers turned off the service to customers who were not registered two days ago as the deadline for registration expired.
The Communications Authority warns that the 60-day period is not another extension for those who have not yet registered their simcards cards.
It says during this period all unregistered cards should be disabled until their owners verify their ownership details, while companies are expected to ensure 100% compliance with the law.
The authority has said that any telephone company that fails to implement the order will be fined 0.5% of its total sales per year. In April, the authority extended the registration period for 6 months which ended last weekend.
With just two days to go before this deadline, 53 million users had confirmed their registration details, leaving more than 10 million at risk of having their phones locked out.
