Harassment kills 85 Kenyan girls in Arabia
85 Kenyan girls have lost their lives in the last 90 days, and about 1,000 have been repatriated, mainly from Saudi Arabia.
This was stated by the Kenyan nominee in the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Alfred Mutua, who said the girls were harassed while they were looking for work.
Dr. Mutua was answering a question when he was being vetted in Parliament, about the measures he would put in place to ensure that the migrant workers are given employment contracts, are protected, and fully enjoy the rights they are given.
"I have looked into this matter, and I have seen systematic failures in the systems, from the way they are recruited here.... and the way they are allowed to work when they arrive in Saudi Arabia and other countries."
The nominee promised that if approved, he would cooperate with the relevant authorities, allowing the Directorate of Criminal Investigation to travel with him to Saudi Arabia, to investigate every death that occurred.
"So that everyone involved in those deaths be prosecuted."
In 2021, Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said 89 Kenyans, mostly domestic workers, had died in Saudi Arabia in the past two years. However, they were associated with heart attacks.
