Kenya's Cabinet Secretary Launches Reforms for a Thriving Sector

Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, has taken the first steps in reforming and organizing the mining sector to ensure that everyone involved benefits. During a visit to Migori County to investigate the challenges faced by artisanal miners in Kalosi, Osiri matanda, Masara, and other mining sites, Mvurya announced a series of measures aimed at improving conditions for the miners.

Mvurya revealed that the government has implemented several mechanisms, including the enhancement of mining caves, the provision of better equipment, and the development of advanced policies to guide and improve working standards. The government is also mapping artisanal mining sites across the country, with sixty-six sites already mapped and more to follow. The ultimate aim is to organize the sites and form cooperatives, connecting them with financial resources for support in terms of skills and equipment.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the government's commitment to decriminalizing artisanal mining and recognizing its importance in helping local communities earn a living. He believes that by supporting and empowering artisanal miners, the government can create a sustainable and profitable mining sector.

Migori Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko called on the Ministry of Mining to work closely with the County Government to discover new minerals and ensure that local miners can benefit from them. He urged the government to improve mining sites and make them safer for miners to prevent accidents and deaths.

A group of Migori County MCAs, led by North Kamagambo MCA Collins Osewe and Kaler MCA Thomas Akungo, representing areas prone to artisanal mining, praised the move. They believe that with the government's support, miners will have the opportunity to settle, work, and improve their living standards with the help of improved policies and skills.
